We have a unique opportunity to stop phone and cable company gouging if we act now.
Thanks to the nearly half-a-million people who signed the Stop The Meter Petition, the CRTC is now reviewing its decision to impose new fees on nearly all Internet users.
Industry Minister Clement told Parliament he will not allow the same decision to be passed by the CRTC, but has not specified whether he will accept a watered-down version of that decision. We know a Big Telecom-friendly compromise is being pushed behind closed doors. If we don't speak up now we could end up back where we started: gouged.
We need to get 100,000 letters to the CRTC now so the Commission, Clement, and other key decision makers know that we will accept nothing less than a fundamental change in the way phone and cable companies operate.
The CRTC has set up the review of usage-based billing so it avoids touching the root cause of this price gouging. They're limiting their review so that many Canadians still end up with a pay-metered Internet. We've come too far to accept this.
We're working with some of the best public interest lawyers, citizen groups, content creators, indie ISPs, and online service providers to push the CRTC to address the underlying stranglehold big telecom companies have over communications in Canada.
We need to back up our policy work with an undeniable show of support from the Canadian people. Please help us get to 100,000 letters of support by sending your comment in HERE.
The Internet is a bastion of Canadian culture, democracy, and innovation. Lets not let it slip away.
The CRTC has made a decision this week that could change the way we use the Internet forever. They have approved Canadian Internet Service Providers to implement Usage-Based Billing (UBB), which puts an end to unlimited Internet plans. Now, you will be charged on what you use and what providers want you to “over use”.
What perfect timing especially when services like Netflix Canada have started to take off. In today’s world, video and streaming multimedia rule our lives.
Netflix Says ISPs that Charge Per GB are Ridiculous
Wired ISPs have large fixed costs of building and maintaining their last mile network of residential cable and fiber. The ISPs’ costs, however, to deliver a marginal gigabyte, which is about an hour of viewing, from one of our regional interchange points over their last mile wired network to the consumer is less than a penny, and falling, so there is no reason that pay-per-gigabyte is economically necessary. Moreover, at $1 per gigabyte over wired networks, it would be grossly overpriced.
NDP digital affairs critic Charlie Angus gets what’s at stake. “We’ve seen this all before with cellphones,” he said last week. “Allowing the Internet Service Providers to ding you every time you download is a rip-off. Canada is already falling behind other countries in terms of choice, accessibility and pricing for the Internet. We need clear rules that put consumers first.”
We need to stop this blatant cash grab. Fight back and join over 75,500 people that have already decided to say enough is enough.Visit StoptheMeter.ca and sign the petition. Our Internet future depends on it!
Do you agree with Usage-Based Billing for Internet in Canada?
At the beginning of June 2010, every Starbucks location in the USA, through AT&T, made their WiFi access free to all. The problem with this was that Canada has Starbucks locations too and the free access was never announced here.
At the time, Starbucks locations in Canada are run through Bell. Users can receive 2 hours for free by signing up for an account or opt to pay for access. Alternatively, if you have an iPad with a Bell SIM card or an iPhone through a Bell contract, you receive free WiFi access.
Well, effective July 1, 2010, Starbucks has now changed its policy and is offering free WiFi access to Canada as well. Starbucks seems to have reached a deal with Bell and WiFi is now accessible through a single-click sign-in with no time limits. 100%, totally free WiFi.
Whether you are a Bell customer, have an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Blackberry, or whatever other device you can think of, it does not matter. Free WiFi for all!

Well, it looks like the people from apple like loosing new devices, here is another iPhone that got lost in the US and ended up in Vietnam. In this video you can see a comparison between the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4G.
It looks like its official and the iPad will be here in Canada on May 28.
Suggested prices are as follows: Wi-Fi-only-$549 for 16 GB, $649 with 32GB for $749 for 64GB.
Wi-Fi and 3G- $679 for 16GB, $779 for 32GB and $879 for 64GB.
Apple haven’t announced which cell phone carrier will provide the 3G singal, but most likely it will be Rogers and maybe you can get a deal on the device if you sign up for a plan.
On the other hand if you don’t want to spend at least $550 + Tax, because you think you need less of a device, then maybe the new Sony Dash can work better for you, the price is $200 (in USA). Have a look at the video below so that you can have an idea of what is the Sony Dash.
When Steve Jobs began to announce the new iPhone OS 4 features last week, the excitement was palpable. Years of anticipation finally realized with the addition of multitasking as well as other tent-pole features. That was the climate of the room until the very end when Jobs casually mentioned during the Q&A that many of those shiny new features you were just made to drool over were not going to be available on the iPhone 3G (so iPhone 3GS and newer only).
At no point was our good ‘ol metal battle ax iPhone (first generation) mentioned. Steve Jobs has now confirmed what many had assumed. MacStories published an email between a reader and Jobs, asking if Apple will supply any updates to the first gen iPhone in the future. Steve’s answer: “Sorry, no.” So that’s the word from the mountain. The “original” iPhone has peaked in its glory days and will be running iPhone OS 3.1.3 for the rest of eternity.
On the other side the announcement for the new iPhone 4G (or it could also be called HD) will be on June 22. It is assumed that the next generation Apple device will be slightly more elongated screen than its predecessor, 5 megapixel camera, possible frontal camera and, of course, the new operating system iPhone OS 4 with a multi-tasking and some other improvements.
If you are waiting for the Apple iPad to come to Canada, it looks like it will arrive by the end of May and will be sold by Rogers at a reduced price, but you’ll need to get a data plan.
