On the night of September 15th 1810, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, ordered the church bells to ring and addressed the Mexican people. He incited them to fight for their independence in what is known today as “El Grito de Dolores” (The Cry of Dolores) or “El Grito de Independencia” (The Cry of Independence). The traditional ceremony of “El Grito de Independencia” has become emblematic of Mexican Independence. It is recreated every year, since the 19th century, by Mexican government officials throughout Mexico and in Mexican Diplomatic representations around the world.
The celebration of Independence is the most important national holiday in Mexico, including civic, cultural and military ceremonies. This year we are proud to celebrate 200 years of Mexican Independence at Thurlow Plaza in Vancouver.
During Fiesta Mexico Independence 2010, will be a re-enactment of the “El Grito de Independencia” by our Mexican representative the Consul General Angel Villalobos. There will also be a series of activities to celebrate including various typical Mexican food vendors, Mexican arts and crafts tables, a play area for children and live folkloric and contemporary shows, with a special performance by world renowned pop singer Aleks Syntek, the official voice of the Mexican Bicentennial.
